Will AI Replace Copywriters?
Editorial estimate, synthesized from CEO statements, AI-attributed layoffs, and automation research, the same method as the Calculator. A provocation, not career advice.
Copywriting was the first creative desk the machines got pointed at. The layoffs already landed.
The Factors
Pushes it up
Generative text models produce first-draft marketing copy, blog posts, and product descriptions in seconds. Commodity content work is exactly what the tools imitate well, and CEOs are publicly framing it as a cost line to cut.
Pulls it down
Brand voice, original reporting, persuasion that lands with a specific human, and accountability for what gets published still need a person. The work moving fastest to AI is the low-stakes, high-volume copy. It isn't the campaign that has to actually move someone.
The Receipt
To embrace the new wave of AI-generated content, starting today we've decided to halt all spending on third-party copywriters and designers.Internal memo, Bluefocus Intelligent Communications Group (April 2023).
Bluefocus, a roughly $3 billion Chinese marketing and PR firm, told staff it was cutting off all spend on outside copywriters and designers in favor of ChatGPT-style generative AI. Separately, Brian Merchant's reporting documented a copywriter whose 60-person team was cut down to him alone, then replaced almost entirely by AI.
What the Machine Still Can't Do
A model can fill a content calendar overnight. It can't sit in a sales call, hear the one objection that keeps killing deals, and write the line that finally answers it. It doesn't know your customer's bad year, and it can't put its name on the claim when the copy is wrong.
What to Do About It
If your shop swapped writers for prompts, that's a receipt. Log it at the Layoff Index and find the others in your industry. The decision to cut you was made by a person with a budget, not by a robot. A risk score is a reason to organize, not to despair.
