AI tutors, auto-graders, and lesson-plan generators are flooding schools, and districts will be tempted to use them to justify bigger class sizes and fewer aides.
Pulls it down
Managing 28 kids, reading the room, and earning trust is human work. BLS ties the slight projected dip to falling enrollment, not AI.
The Receipt
Overall employment of kindergarten and elementary school teachers is projected to decline 2 percent from 2024 to 2034, attributed to a declining school-age population.U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook (2025).
The projected -2% is demographic. The 5-18 population is set to fall about 6.7% over the decade. That's still about 103,800 teacher openings a year. BLS does not attribute the dip to AI.
What the Machine Still Can't Do
A clanker can't tell when a quiet kid is hiding something hard at home, hold a classroom's attention, or know which student needs a push and which needs a break.
What to Do About It
AI won't replace the teacher. It'll be used to justify cramming more kids into your room. That's a contract fight and a budget fight, not a robot one. Learn the framing at the Lexicon and stand with educators. A risk score is a reason to organize, not to despair.
