Machine translation has crossed the 'good enough' line for high-volume, low-liability text. Companies are openly retitling the work as 'review what the AI made' instead of 'do the translation.'

Legal, medical, and live interpreting carry real consequences for a wrong word. Idiom, cultural context, tone, and the accountability of a human in the room when the stakes are high still don't automate.

Duolingo cut roughly 10% of its contractor workforce at the end of 2023, starting with translators, then writers in October 2024, replacing up to about 100 contractors who built its lessons. Remaining staff were shifted to reviewing AI output. The Washington Post reported the translator cuts in January 2024.
What the Machine Still Can't Do
A model can swap words between languages. It can't read the room in a courtroom, a hospital, or an asylum interview, where one mistranslated phrase changes a life. It doesn't carry the duty of getting it right when getting it wrong is on the record.
