Specialized welding robots already do most of the work inside assembly plants. So the exposed slice is high-volume, fixed-position factory welding.
Pulls it down
Pipeline, structural, shipyard, and repair welding happens in positions and conditions no fixed robot can reach. The shortage is the story.
The Receipt
The American Welding Society projects that the country will need more than 320,000 new welding professionals by 2030, about 80,000 new welders every year.American Welding Society projection, cited by Interesting Engineering (2025).
Even a Hyundai-backed humanoid welding-robot effort (prototype targeted for late 2026, deployment 2027) is pitched at a shortage of 80,000 welders a year, not a surplus. BLS projects 2% growth with about 45,600 openings annually through 2034.
What the Machine Still Can't Do
A clanker can't weld overhead in a ship's hull, read a bead through the smoke, and adapt the heat when the steel fights back.
What to Do About It
